Baccalaureate students from IALE International School participated in the activity “Discover the microscopic world” at Valencia University (UV). Students visited the microscopy service of the UV, located at Burjasot Campus. The objective of the visit was to bring the students closer to the techniques that are currently used in an investigation. Throughout the morning, students were able to observe how the different biological samples are prepared to be visualized through electronic microscopes. Specifically, students were visualizing biological samples in transmission electronic microscopes, scanning electronic microscopes and confocal laser microscopy.
Unfortunately, for the activity “Discover the microscopic world”, only 10 Baccalaureate students from IALE International School could participate. Students that couldn’t go to the visit stopped in the Biology classroom participating in a practical session. This practical session was about: (i) To determine through biochemical techniques the presence of sugars, lipids (fats) and proteins in a biological sample (full cream cow milk). Students were manipulating and using different reactive agents to identify the presence of these biomolecules (sugar, fats and proteins ), and (ii) to visualize cellular structures and vegetative organs of plants using the techniques of cell staining and its subsequent visualization through the use of optical microscopes and magnifying glasses provided by the Biology classroom.
